OSOGBO, OSUN STATE — The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the forthcoming Osun State election, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has dismissed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s reported call for the United Kingdom to impose visa restrictions and economic sanctions on APC leaders in the state, describing the move as a sign of political desperation ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Speaking while receiving a British delegation in Osogbo on Tuesday, Oyebamiji rejected allegations that the APC was promoting political violence, describing the claims as baseless and without evidence.
According to the APC candidate, if any political party had grounds to raise concerns over political violence, it would be the APC, citing the deaths of several of its supporters before and after previous elections in the state.
Oyebamiji alleged that APC members were killed in communities including Ilesa, Ile-Ife, Osogbo, Ikirun, Ikire and Ede, adding that the incidents were reported to the Nigeria Police and that some of the cases are currently before the courts.
He also referred to the killing of the Chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, Hon. Remi Abbas, describing it as one of several violent incidents involving APC members in recent years.
The APC flag bearer maintained that his party has consistently allowed security agencies to investigate such incidents instead of making what he described as unsubstantiated accusations before the international community.
Oyebamiji commended the Inspector-General of Police and other security agencies for their professionalism and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to supporting law enforcement agencies in ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
He also expressed confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stating that the commission has the capacity to conduct a free, fair and credible governorship election on August 15, 2026.
The APC candidate further acknowledged the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom and called for continued cooperation in promoting democratic governance and development.
The British delegation, led by Senior Political Adviser Wale Adebajo, said its visit to Osun State was part of ongoing peace-building engagements ahead of the governorship election.
The meeting was attended by senior APC leaders, campaign officials and other party stakeholders.
