KADUNA, NIGERIA — Families of 37 worshippers abducted during an Easter Day attack in Ariko village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have expressed frustration over what they describe as the government’s silence, as the victims mark more than 100 days in captivity.
The worshippers were kidnapped on April 5, 2026, when armed bandits attacked the community during Easter celebrations. The assault reportedly claimed the lives of five people, left several others injured, and saw 37 residents—including women, children, elderly persons and individuals with health challenges—taken away by the attackers.
A journalist from the affected community, Reuben Buhari, said the victims have continued to endure harsh conditions in captivity, alleging that many have been forced to wear the same clothes since their abduction and are living without adequate food, shelter or medical care.
According to him, some of the captives have become seriously ill, while others continue to endure severe physical and emotional hardship.
Another community representative, J. D. Ariko of the Kuturmi Unity Development Association, said the kidnappers are demanding ₦1 billion and 35 motorcycles as ransom for the release of the victims.
He alleged that despite the prolonged captivity of the worshippers, affected families have received little support and are appealing to the Federal and Kaduna State Governments to intensify rescue efforts.
Community members also claimed that those who publicly speak about the plight of the victims often face intimidation, making many residents reluctant to comment on the situation.
More than three months after the attack, the abductees remain in captivity, with relatives continuing to appeal to security agencies to secure their safe and unconditional release.
The incident is the latest in a series of kidnappings and violent attacks that have continued to affect communities across parts of northern Nigeria, raising renewed concerns over security and the protection of rural populations.
