The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the just-concluded Osun State election, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has appealed to party members and supporters to remain calm and peaceful following the outcome of the election.
Oyebamiji, in a message to APC members, supporters and leaders across the state on Tuesday, thanked them for their commitment, sacrifices and efforts throughout the election campaign.
He acknowledged that the APC had hoped for a different result but said the party respected the position announced by the electoral umpire and was currently reviewing the outcome of the election.
According to him, the campaign may have ended, but the issues and development agenda presented by the APC remain important to the people of Osun State.
Oyebamiji also expressed appreciation to voters who supported his candidacy, as well as campaign volunteers, party leaders and members who worked throughout the election period.
However, the APC candidate raised concern over what he described as increasing hostility and alleged attacks against members and supporters of the party following the election.
He appealed to the Osun State Government and security agencies to urgently intervene, alleging that attacks witnessed during the period leading to the election had taken another dimension in the 24 hours before his statement.
Oyebamiji specifically called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act quickly to prevent further violence.
Despite his concerns, he urged APC supporters not to retaliate or engage in violence, stressing the importance of maintaining peace while the party continues its review of the election outcome.
He encouraged party members to remain active in their communities, continue organising peacefully and remain committed to the development of Osun State.
The appeal comes amid heightened political tension following the governorship election.
According to the result announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ademola Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party according to the report, was declared winner after securing 511,067 votes, while APC candidate Oyebamiji polled 444,815 votes.
Oyebamiji said he remained proud of the campaign and grateful to everyone who supported his candidacy.
He concluded his message by praying for the people of Osun State and Nigeria.
