The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke distributed ₦20,000 to civil servants, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, and residents in an attempt to influence voters ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
In a statement released on Wednesday by the party’s Governorship Campaign Council, APC spokesperson Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye alleged that the state government initiated a widespread cash distribution programme by requesting residents to submit their bank account details before receiving the funds.
According to the opposition party, thousands of workers and residents allegedly received direct transfers of ₦20,000 despite what it described as the government’s failure to remit workers’ contributory pensions and cooperative deductions over the past two years.
The APC further claimed that NYSC members serving in Osun State, who reportedly receive a monthly allowance of ₦5,000 from the state government, also received ₦20,000 less than two weeks before the governorship election.
Describing the alleged payments as a form of vote-buying, the party called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to investigate the matter, insisting that anyone found culpable should be held accountable.
The APC also alleged that despite making budgetary provisions for gratuity payments, the Adeleke administration had failed to settle outstanding entitlements owed to pensioners. It further claimed that some beneficiaries of the ₦20,000 payments were allegedly required to pledge political allegiance before receiving the funds.
The allegations come amid heightened political activities ahead of the August 15 governorship election. Governor Adeleke had earlier warned against any attempt to manipulate the electoral process and raised concerns over reports that the EFCC planned to freeze some state government accounts.
The Osun State Government had not publicly responded to the APC’s latest allegations at the time this report was published.
