Six passengers have been confirmed dead while four others were rescued following a tragic boat accident on Lagos waterways on Tuesday night, SUNTV Global Channel reports.
The incident occurred around 8:35 p.m. along the Nigerdock axis of the Igbologun Water Channel, involving a Savvy Marine passenger boat that was traveling from Ilashe Beach House.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the development. The statement was signed by LASWA’s Head of Public Affairs, Wuraola Alake, and NIWA Lagos Area Office Head of Corporate Affairs, Omowunmi Yussuff.
According to the agencies, emergency response teams were immediately activated after a distress alert was received. Search and rescue operations were carried out in collaboration with the Marine Police and other first responders.
“As of the time of this report, four passengers have been successfully rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement said.
“Sadly, six other passengers were recovered lifeless at the scene. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to account for all persons involved.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the boat may have collided with a submerged object, although authorities stressed that a full investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
LASWA and NIWA expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and reassured the public of their commitment to improving safety on Lagos inland waterways.
The agencies also reiterated the importance of strict compliance with water transport safety regulations, particularly proper navigation procedures and adherence to night travel rules.
Residents were urged to remain calm and rely only on verified updates from LASWA, NIWA, and other official sources as rescue and investigative efforts continue.
