The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in Nigeria (VSCN) has called for the immediate and permanent lifting of United States sanctions on Venezuela following the country’s devastating twin earthquakes, which the group said have claimed more than 2,000 lives, displaced over 50,000 people, and caused widespread destruction.
In a statement signed by its representative, Camarada Dimeji Macaulay, the organisation expressed sympathy to the Venezuelan people and the Bolivarian Government, extending condolences to families who lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods in the disaster.
The group argued that the earthquakes have exposed what it described as the humanitarian impact of U.S. sanctions, claiming the restrictions have limited Venezuela’s access to financial resources, medicines, medical equipment, technology, and other essential supplies needed for recovery.
According to the VSCN, maintaining the sanctions while the country struggles to recover from the disaster amounts to collective punishment. The organisation therefore urged the United States to lift all sanctions without delay to allow humanitarian assistance and reconstruction efforts to proceed unhindered.
The campaign also appealed to the Nigerian Government to publicly support the removal of the sanctions, strengthen diplomatic ties with Venezuela, and contribute to international humanitarian efforts aimed at assisting victims of the earthquakes.
In addition, the group called on the African Union to oppose unilateral sanctions and mobilise African nations in support of Venezuela’s recovery, arguing that such sanctions undermine national sovereignty and international law.
The VSCN further urged the United Nations to expand humanitarian assistance to Venezuela and ensure that relief operations are not hindered by political or economic restrictions.
Calling for global solidarity, the organisation appealed to trade unions, civil society organisations, youth groups, political parties, and social movements across Africa and the world to support Venezuela during its recovery efforts.
The statement concluded with a renewed call for the immediate removal of U.S. sanctions, maintaining that humanitarian assistance should not be obstructed during times of national tragedy.
