The Nigerian gospel music scene has been plunged into grief following the sudden death of Taiwo Adegbodu, one half of the celebrated Adegbodu Twins. The news was confirmed early Sunday via the duo’s official Facebook fan page, managed by their team.
In a heartfelt post, Taiwo’s family expressed their anguish over the untimely loss:
“Taiwo, why will you leave your kids and me without notification? My heart is bleeding. Lord, how do you want me to cope without him? God, why? This is too much for me to bear!”
Fans, fellow artists, and church communities across Nigeria and the diaspora have since poured out condolences. Popular gospel singer Esther Igbekele also shared her sorrow on Instagram, posting a photograph of Taiwo with the words, “Erin wo, Ajanaku sun bi oke. Hard to bear. Goodnight, bro.”
Taiwo, alongside his twin brother Kehinde Adegbodu, formed the iconic Adegbodu Twins, whose music has been a cornerstone of Yoruba gospel for over two decades. The duo rose to prominence in 1999 with their debut album Faratimi (Lean on Me), which resonated deeply with Christian audiences in southwestern Nigeria.
The twins’ music, a blend of strong biblical messages and traditional Yoruba rhythms, produced several church favorites including Shower Your Blessing, God Concert, and Emi Mimo. Their unique sound fused contemporary gospel with indigenous percussion, earning them a devoted following.
Beyond music, Taiwo and Kehinde were influential figures in the entertainment and cultural sectors. Taiwo was notably appointed Special Adviser on Entertainment and Tourism by Ademola Adeleke, Governor of Osun State.
Taiwo’s passing comes just six weeks after the death of fellow gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, known as Omije Ojumi, amplifying the sense of loss within Nigeria’s Christian music community. As the nation mourns, fans and peers continue to celebrate the enduring legacy of Taiwo Adegbodu and the spiritual impact of the Adegbodu Twins.
