The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Area Command, has intercepted a large consignment of military uniforms and high-grade cannabis valued at approximately ₦259.68 million along the Idiroko border corridor in Ogun State.
The Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, disclosed the development during a press briefing held at the Command’s headquarters in Idiroko on Tuesday.
According to him, operatives acted on credible intelligence to intercept a luxury bus without a registration number, suspected to be transporting contraband items through the border route.
A detailed search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of numerous military camouflage uniforms concealed in cartons alongside various quantities of cannabis, in what authorities described as a coordinated smuggling attempt.
Afeni expressed concern over the seizure of military uniforms, warning that such items pose a serious security threat due to their frequent use by criminals for impersonation.
“The seizure of military uniforms is particularly worrying given the current security situation. Unauthorised possession is often linked to impersonation by criminals who disguise themselves as security personnel to commit crimes or evade detection,” he stated.
Items recovered from the bus include 197 camouflage trousers and shorts, five camouflage two-piece sets, 32 camouflage undergarments, and 32 camouflage tops, all carefully concealed in unmarked cartons.
Other seized items include 154 units of high-grade cannabis indica popularly known as “Canadian Loud,” seven parcels of Colorado cannabis, and other related contraband.
The Customs boss called on members of the public to provide timely intelligence to security agencies to help combat smuggling and criminal activities along border communities.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with sister security agencies in tackling both smuggling and insecurity.
The seized cannabis has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Idiroko Special Area Command, for further investigation and prosecution.
Receiving the items, Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Ganiyu Adeyoye, described the interception as a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking and related crimes.
Security agencies have repeatedly raised concerns over the illegal circulation of military uniforms, noting that they are often used by armed bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal groups to carry out attacks and evade arrest.
Authorities say continued surveillance and inter-agency cooperation remain critical to addressing smuggling networks operating across Nigeria’s border regions.
