The Federal Government of has begun preparations for possible evacuation flights as concerns grow over renewed xenophobic tensions in , with at least 130 Nigerians already registered for voluntary repatriation.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, , disclosed that the government is closely monitoring the situation following a wave of anti-foreigner protests in parts of South Africa.
According to her, President has expressed serious concern and directed relevant agencies to ensure the safety of Nigerians abroad while intensifying diplomatic engagement with South African authorities.
“There is heightened anxiety over the series of anti-foreigner protests, particularly those targeting Nigerians in some cities,” the minister said.
Despite assurances from South African officials condemning xenophobia, Nigeria confirmed the deaths of two of its citizens in separate incidents allegedly involving security personnel.
One of the victims, Amamiro Chidiebere Emmanuel, reportedly died from injuries sustained after an alleged assault by members of the South African National Defence Force in Port Elizabeth. Another Nigerian, Nnaemeka Matthew Andrew, was said to have died following an encounter with metro police officers, with his body later discovered in Pretoria.
The Nigerian government has described the incidents as “utterly condemnable” and is demanding a full investigation and justice for the victims.
While recent protests in cities like Pretoria and Johannesburg were largely controlled by security forces, disturbing images and reports of xenophobic rhetoric and violence have sparked global concern.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu revealed that another round of demonstrations is expected between May 4 and May 8, raising fears of further escalation.
In response, Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner and is working through diplomatic channels to ensure better protection for its citizens.
She added that arrangements are ongoing to assist Nigerians who wish to return home, emphasizing that the safety of citizens remains the government’s top priority.
The minister also reminded South Africa of Nigeria’s historical support during its anti-apartheid struggle, urging renewed commitment to safeguarding foreign nationals.
“This recurring wave of xenophobic attacks, especially around election periods, must be addressed decisively,” she stated.
Nigeria says it will continue to collaborate with South African authorities under existing agreements aimed at early warning and prevention of such crises.
