Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former councillor in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos over alleged involvement in illicit drug trafficking.

The suspect, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, a 45-year-old former two-term councillor at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council, was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation carried out at his residence in Ilado community on Monday, March 2, 2026.

According to a statement released on Sunday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, anti-narcotic officers conducted a detailed search of the property and discovered 40 kilograms of skunk, a strong strain of cannabis, concealed in one of the rooms.

Investigators said Olalekan, who currently works as a legislative aide, allegedly admitted ownership of both the recovered drugs and the house where they were found during questioning.

The suspect also confirmed his political history, revealing that he previously served two terms as councillor representing the Orimedu community in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Council.

“In his statement, Sheleru admitted ownership of the exhibit and the property where it was recovered,” Babafemi said.

The NDLEA noted that further investigations into the case are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking networks across the country.
