Thousands of mourners flooded Tehran’s iconic Enghelab Square on Sunday following the confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in what authorities describe as a coordinated U.S.–Israeli military strike.
State television in Tehran announced the death early Sunday, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly declared that the 86-year-old cleric had been “eliminated,” calling him “one of the most evil people in history.”
SUNTV Global Channel reports that crowds dressed mostly in black gathered in the city center, many visibly emotional as they waved Iranian flags and held portraits of Khamenei, who had ruled as Iran’s supreme authority since 1989.
Footage aired by Al Jazeera showed mourners chanting religious slogans and expressing shock over the killing, which marks one of the most dramatic escalations in Middle East tensions in decades.
In a strongly worded statement, Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps condemned the killing as “murder” and vowed a “severe and decisive” response.
The group warned that what it described as the “most ferocious operations in history” could soon be launched against Israel and U.S. military installations across the Gulf region.
Explosions and air-raid sirens were reported in multiple Gulf cities, including Doha, Dubai, and Manama, while the Israeli military confirmed it was responding to incoming Iranian missile fire.
Speaking from the White House, Trump warned that any retaliation from Tehran would be met with a level of force “never seen before,” heightening global fears of a full-scale regional war.
