A commercial bus conductor, identified as Lekan Olasunkanmi, has been arrested after allegedly stabbing a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer with a screwdriver during a traffic enforcement operation at Ile-Epo Market, inward Abule-Egba, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to LASTMA, the incident occurred after officers intercepted a Volkswagen commercial bus accused of obstructing traffic. During the enforcement operation, the driver allegedly resisted arrest, leading to a confrontation in which the conductor reportedly attacked a LASTMA officer with a screwdriver.
The injured officer was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received emergency treatment and is said to be responding well.
The suspect was arrested and handed over to the Abattoir Police Division for investigation and possible prosecution. During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly admitted that he brought out the screwdriver and mistakenly stabbed the traffic officer during the altercation.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki condemned the attack, warning that anyone who assaults traffic officials while they are carrying out their lawful duties will face the full weight of the law.
He also urged motorists and commercial transport operators to obey traffic regulations and cooperate with enforcement officers to ensure safety and order on Lagos roads.
