The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦40 million to the families of officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) who lost their lives in the line of duty, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of public servants and their dependants.
The disbursement, which took place on Wednesday at the LASTMA headquarters in Oshodi, saw 20 families receive ₦2 million each. The exercise was coordinated by the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Giwa stressed that the financial support should not be viewed as compensation, noting that no amount of money could equate the value of human life. He described the gesture as a symbolic show of solidarity and appreciation for the ultimate sacrifice made by the fallen officers.
“This intervention is a clear statement that the sacrifices of these brave men and women were not in vain. Their service to Lagos State will always be remembered, and their families will not be left to shoulder the burden of loss alone,” Giwa said, while reiterating the Sanwo-Olu administration’s people-centred approach to governance.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, commended the initiative, saying it would strengthen confidence in government institutions and reassure serving officers that dedication and sacrifice are recognised and valued.
Also speaking, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the deceased officers as patriots whose discipline and commitment would remain indelible in the history of the agency. He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for what he termed “humane and responsive leadership.”
Speaking on behalf of the families, the widow of the pioneer General Manager of LASTMA, Mrs. Adebayo Adegboayega Coker, advised beneficiaries to judiciously utilise the funds, particularly towards the education and welfare of their children.
In a vote of thanks, Mrs. Adeyemo Rotimi expressed deep appreciation to the Lagos State Government, saying the gesture had brought comfort and reassurance that the sacrifices of their loved ones would never be forgotten.
Among the beneficiaries were Mrs. Coker, Ola Aminat Adepeju, Arogundade Kudirat Oladunni, Adeyemo Silifat Eniola, Falana Felicia Adeola, Bakare Ajoke Fatima, Giwa Hameedat Oyindamola, Dada Adedoyin Rebecca, Akinsemoyin Toheebat Olasunbo, Sanni Esther Oyeyemi, Junaid Oyinlola Deborah, Aladaba Ibrahim Adewunmi, Alimi Mariam Morenike, Omosebi Temitope Jumoke, Alowooye Folashade Mojisola and Shittu Adijat Yetunde.
