The Lagos State Government has announced plans to prosecute officials linked to an alleged attack on enforcement officers during an inspection of a bank facility in Victoria Island.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office were obstructed while carrying out their lawful duties at a facility owned by Access Bank Plc.
The premises, located in the Oniru axis of Victoria Island, were inspected following a whistleblower report concerning the bank’s wastewater treatment operations.
According to Wahab, enforcement officers were denied access to the facility by security personnel and management representatives, with members of the inspection team allegedly assaulted during the process.
Despite the resistance, samples of wastewater discharged from the facility were obtained and subjected to laboratory analysis, which reportedly confirmed violations of environmental regulations.
“The State will proceed to court to obtain necessary orders for the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in the attack on government officials,” Wahab stated.
He further revealed that additional enforcement personnel would be deployed to ensure compliance, including the sealing of the facility in line with Lagos environmental laws.
“Enforcement officers will be reinforced to return and seal off the property in accordance with the law,” he added.
The commissioner emphasized that the government would not tolerate violations, regardless of the individuals or organisations involved.
“There will be no sacred cows. Anyone found violating environmental laws will be held accountable,” he said.
