A joint security operation involving the and the has led to the arrest of six suspected kidnappers, including a former traditional leader, in , Afijio Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Fulani men, were apprehended following a tense security alert triggered by the discovery of weapons and suspicious items within the community.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident began on the night of April 21 when a local vigilante operative noticed a suspicious man loitering near a residence in the Olorunsogo area. When questioned, the man reportedly claimed he was heading to the residence of a former Sarki but attempted to flee moments later, raising alarm.
Although the suspect escaped, he abandoned a sack containing several items, including firearms, locally made ammunition, a machete, syringe, torchlight, and other personal effects.
The discovery prompted immediate reporting to the Ilora Divisional Police Command, which launched a follow-up operation. Acting on intelligence, security operatives traced the items to the residence of the former Sarki, leading to a coordinated raid.
During the operation, six suspects were arrested. Sources revealed that after preliminary interrogation, three individuals were released, while the remaining three — including the traditional leader — were transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Ibadan for further investigation.
The incident has heightened tension within the community, with residents demanding transparency over the release of some suspects and calling for a thorough probe into the alleged kidnapping network.
The traditional ruler of Ilora commended residents for maintaining calm and avoiding mob action, noting that the situation could have escalated into violence.
Community members have also appealed to the Oyo State Commissioner of Police to ensure justice is served and all those found culpable are prosecuted.
As of the time of filing this report, the police authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
