A journalist, Nura Distin, has alleged that he was arrested, detained, and remanded in prison after accusing the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Yobe Microfinance Bank, Sheriff Almuhajir, of having a romantic relationship with his wife.
According to Distin, the allegations were made on his social media platforms, where he claimed that the bank executive maintained a relationship with his wife both before and after their marriage. He also alleged that the bank chief promoted his wife to the position of branch manager while the alleged relationship was ongoing.
The journalist said he shared screenshots of chats and other materials online, which he claimed supported his allegations. However, the materials were no longer publicly available at the time of reporting.
Distin further alleged that the affair contributed to the breakdown of his marriage and eventual separation from his wife.
He also accused the bank’s managing director of using his influence and political connections to retaliate against him after the allegations became public. According to him, officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Damaturu invited him for questioning, detained him for four days, and later secured a court order remanding him in prison.
Before honouring the police invitation on June 30, Distin wrote on Facebook that he remained committed to telling the truth and would cooperate with the investigation. After reporting to the police, he posted that he had appeared before the SCID in Damaturu.
Despite the development, the journalist maintained that he would not be intimidated, insisting that he would continue to pursue the matter through lawful means.
The incident has drawn reactions from some of Distin’s supporters. A businessman identified as Sirdeeq Jagaban condemned the journalist’s arrest, describing it as an attempt to intimidate him, and called for his immediate release.
As of the time of this report, the Nigeria Police Force and the management of Yobe Microfinance Bank had not publicly responded to Distin’s allegations. The claims remain allegations and have not been independently verified by SUNTV Global Channel.
