The Islamic State West Africa Province has confirmed the death of one of its senior commanders and Shura Council member, Abu Yahya Al-Muhajir, in what is being described as a major blow to the group’s leadership.
According to intelligence sources cited by security analyst Zagazola Makama, the commander played a critical role in coordinating ISWAP operations across the Lake Chad Basin.
Reports indicate that Al-Muhajir may have been killed during a failed insurgent attack on Malam Fatori on March 18, or died from injuries sustained during subsequent airstrikes by Nigerian military forces targeting fleeing fighters.
Security sources revealed that the attempted assault on Malam Fatori was successfully repelled by Nigerian troops, resulting in heavy casualties among ISWAP fighters.
Initial assessments suggest that about 80 to 84 insurgents were killed during the confrontation and follow-up clearance operations, with many others sustaining injuries.
Internal communications from the group reportedly acknowledged the scale of the losses, noting that the death of Al-Muhajir could disrupt ISWAP’s command structure, particularly in the northern axis of Borno State.
Malam Fatori, located near the Nigeria–Niger border, remains a strategic location due to its proximity to key supply routes and its importance in ongoing military operations aimed at stabilizing the region.
As of the time of this report, the Nigerian military has yet to officially confirm the death. However, intensified operations continue across the Lake Chad corridor as part of efforts to dismantle terrorist strongholds.
