Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, is facing mounting public backlash following reports that his administration sponsored a pilgrimage to Jerusalem for senior officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state, raising serious concerns over the integrity and independence of Nigeria’s electoral process.
The officials reportedly scheduled for the trip included the Imo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sylvia Agu, three departmental heads, and 27 electoral officers. Sources indicate that formal send-off activities were held at the Government House Chapel in Owerri before the planned departure to the Holy Land.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the pilgrimage was facilitated with logistical and financial support from the Imo State Government, a development that has sparked widespread criticism from civil society groups, political analysts, and members of the public.
INEC is constitutionally mandated to operate as an independent body, free from political influence. Critics argue that a sitting governor sponsoring foreign travel for electoral officials—especially as Nigeria gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections—poses a serious threat to public confidence in the neutrality of the electoral umpire.
Reacting from Owerri, public affairs commentator Casmir Nweze described the development as “a dangerous erosion of democratic safeguards,” calling for disciplinary action against the INEC officials allegedly involved.
According to Nweze, the timing of the reported sponsorship sends troubling signals. He alleged that the move was aimed at cultivating undue influence over electoral officials ahead of future elections, warning that such actions could further destabilise the state’s already fragile political environment.
The controversy intensified after reports emerged that the planned pilgrimage was later called off amid public outrage, with unverified claims that each official had been offered substantial sums of money. Neither the Imo State Government nor INEC has officially confirmed these allegations as of the time of filing this report.
Governor Uzodimma, who has been in office since 2020 following a Supreme Court judgment that overturned the 2019 governorship election results, has long been a polarising figure in Imo politics. His rise to power through judicial intervention earned him the nickname “Supreme Court Governor” among critics.
Opposition voices have also cited previous elections in the state, including House of Assembly polls in which the ruling party reportedly swept all local government areas, as evidence of what they describe as a shrinking democratic space.
As pressure mounts, calls are growing for a transparent investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the alleged sponsorship and to reassure Nigerians of INEC’s independence ahead of future elections.
