At least five suspected Boko Haram insurgents and three members of local vigilante groups have been killed following a deadly ambush along the Ngoshe–Pulka Road in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, SUNTV Global Channel reports.
The incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Friday when armed insurgents laid an ambush for operatives of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and a local Hunters Group who were on routine patrol along the notoriously volatile corridor.
Security sources said the surprise attack quickly degenerated into a fierce exchange of gunfire between both sides. During the confrontation, five of the attackers were reportedly neutralised.
However, the operation claimed the lives of three CJTF members identified as Yunusa Ali Ananicha, Adamu Zakari, and Daddy Ali, who sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the clash.
The bodies of the slain vigilantes were evacuated to the Gwoza General Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead on arrival. Their remains were later released to their families for burial in line with Islamic rites.
In response to the attack, troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been placed on high alert along the Ngoshe–Pulka axis, an area that has witnessed repeated insurgent activity over the years.
Military sources disclosed that security has been reinforced in the area, with intensified patrols and surveillance aimed at preventing further attacks and possible retaliatory strikes by fleeing insurgents.
Residents have once again called for sustained military presence and improved security along the road to safeguard communities and commuters from persistent terrorist threats.
