Pope Leo XIV has broken his silence following sharp criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump, making it clear that he will not be drawn into political confrontation.
Speaking to journalists aboard the papal aircraft en route to Algeria on Monday, the pontiff firmly distanced himself from political disputes, emphasizing that his mission is rooted in faith and peace, not politics.
“I am not a politician. I have no intention of entering into a debate with him,” the Pope stated, in response to Trump’s recent attack.
Maintaining a calm and measured tone, Pope Leo said he believes the public can judge the situation for themselves without him engaging in a back-and-forth.
“I think people who read will be able to draw their own conclusions,” he added.
The Pope reiterated that his primary responsibility is to preach the message of the Gospel, stressing that he will continue to speak out against war and global conflict regardless of criticism.
“I will continue to speak loudly against war and promote peace and dialogue between nations,” he said.
He also warned against the misuse of religion for political purposes, cautioning that spiritual teachings should not be twisted to support conflict or division.
“The message of the Church remains peace — blessed are the peacemakers,” he emphasized.
In a direct response to mounting political pressure, Pope Leo made it clear he is not intimidated by Washington.
“I am not afraid of the Trump administration,” he declared, while reaffirming his decision to avoid political debates.
The remarks come days after President Trump launched a strong verbal attack, accusing the Pope of weak leadership on crime and foreign policy, and questioning his stance on global security issues.
Despite the tension, Pope Leo has chosen a path of restraint, echoing his earlier message delivered at St. Peter’s Basilica, where he called on world leaders to abandon war and embrace dialogue.
“Stop. It is time for peace,” the Pope had urged, warning against rising global aggression and the dangerous fusion of religion with violence.
As the war of words between global political and religious figures continues to draw attention, Pope Leo’s response signals a deliberate effort to rise above political conflict and focus on his spiritual mission.
Observers say the development highlights growing tensions at the intersection of global politics, religion, and diplomacy.
