Troops of Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force, have reportedly neutralised 61 suspected ISWAP terrorists following a failed attack on a military base in Borno State.

Attack on Military Base Repelled

According to military sources, the insurgents launched a coordinated assault in the early hours of Wednesday on Malam Fatori, targeting troops stationed at the 68 Battalion.

The attackers reportedly advanced from the Duguri axis and deployed armed drones in a bid to penetrate the military formation.

However, the operation was swiftly countered by troops using superior firepower and strategic coordination.

Airstrikes Turn the Tide

Sources revealed that the decisive moment came with the deployment of precision airstrikes.

“Our forces executed four highly effective air interdiction strikes on enemy positions, destroying their fighting capability,” a military source disclosed.

The combined efforts of ground troops and air support forced the insurgents into a chaotic retreat toward the Arege area after suffering heavy casualties.

Regional Support from Niger Republic

In a significant show of regional cooperation, allied air forces from Niger Republic also carried out strike missions against fleeing terrorists, further intensifying pressure on the insurgents.

Minimal Casualties on Troops

Despite the intensity of the battle, only four Nigerian soldiers sustained minor injuries, and they have since been stabilised, according to sources.

Strategic Importance of Malam Fatori

Malam Fatori, located near the Nigeria–Niger border, remains a critical frontline community in the fight against insurgency in the Lake Chad region, often targeted due to its strategic position.

Ongoing War Against Terror

The successful operation highlights the continued efforts of Nigerian forces to dismantle terrorist networks, particularly Islamic State West Africa Province, which has remained active in the North-East.

The use of drones by insurgents also signals evolving tactics, raising concerns about the changing nature of warfare in the region.
