Former United States Vice President Kamala Harris has strongly condemned the military action ordered by President Donald Trump in Venezuela, describing the operation as “unlawful, unwise, and dangerous,” and warning that it could destabilise the entire Latin American region.
In a statement posted on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter), Harris criticised the U.S. military strikes and the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, arguing that the move neither advances America’s national security nor protects its economic interests.
“Donald Trump’s actions in Venezuela do not make America safer, stronger, or more affordable,” Harris said, adding that the operation risks repeating past foreign policy mistakes with devastating consequences.
While acknowledging Venezuela’s long-running political and humanitarian crisis, Harris stressed that internal instability does not justify foreign military intervention.
“That Maduro is a brutal and illegitimate dictator does not change the fact that this action was both unlawful and unwise,” she stated. “We’ve seen this movie before.”
Harris warned that the U.S. may be falling into a familiar pattern of interventionist policies that often end in chaos rather than stability.
“These are wars for regime change or oil that are sold to the public as strength, but they spiral into disorder, and American families are left to pay the price,” she said.
According to the former vice president, the Trump administration lacks both public backing and a clear legal framework for the operation.
“The American people do not want this, and they are tired of being lied to,” Harris said, accusing the administration of acting without transparency or democratic consent.
She further alleged that the real motivations behind the military action were economic and political rather than humanitarian.
“This is not about drugs or democracy,” Harris argued. “It is about oil and Donald Trump’s desire to posture as a regional strongman.”
Harris also pointed to what she described as contradictions in Trump’s handling of law enforcement and opposition politics related to Venezuela.
“If he truly cared about democracy or fighting drug trafficking, he wouldn’t pardon a convicted drug trafficker or sideline Venezuela’s legitimate opposition while cutting deals with Maduro’s cronies,” she said.
Raising alarm over the broader implications, Harris warned that U.S. troops and taxpayers are being placed at risk without a defined strategy.
“The President is endangering American service members, spending billions of dollars, destabilising an entire region, and offering no clear legal authority, no exit plan, and no tangible benefit for people at home,” she added.
She concluded by calling for a shift in U.S. leadership priorities, urging a focus on domestic welfare and international cooperation.
“America needs leadership that prioritises lowering costs for working families, enforcing the rule of law, strengthening alliances, and above all, putting the American people first,” Harris said.
