Gunmen have launched a deadly attack on Aqua Triton Company in Ogunmakin, near Ibadan, Oyo State, killing a police officer and abducting an Indian expatriate in what authorities described as a commando-style operation.
The attack occurred on Saturday when armed assailants stormed the company premises and engaged security personnel on duty in a fierce gun battle.
Confirming the incident, the Oyo State Police Command said the attackers overpowered the security team during the assault, leading to the death of a police officer who was defending the facility.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, clarified that the abducted foreign national is Indian, correcting earlier reports that claimed the victim was Chinese.
“There was an attack at Aqua Triton Company in Ogunmakin, near Ibadan, where yet-to-be-identified gunmen stormed the facility in a commando-style operation,” Olayinka said.
He explained that although security operatives managed to injure some of the attackers, one police officer paid the ultimate price during the exchange.
“One police officer tragically lost his life while repelling the attackers. Some of the assailants were injured, but they escaped with the Indian expatriate principal,” he added.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Femi Haruna, ordered an immediate and coordinated security response.
“The Commissioner of Police directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to lead the Anti-Kidnapping Squad and other tactical teams to the scene,” the police spokesperson said.
Security operatives have since launched an intensive bush-combing operation across Ogunmakin and surrounding areas in a bid to rescue the abducted expatriate and apprehend the perpetrators.
The police also confirmed that a full-scale investigation is underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those behind it.
Residents and workers in the area have been assured of enhanced security measures, as the police urged members of the public to provide credible information that could assist ongoing operations.
