Suspected gunmen have reportedly killed a commercial driver and abducted several passengers during a violent attack on the Benin–Ore axis of the busy expressway in southern Nigeria.
The victims were said to be travelling in a bus operated by when armed assailants ambushed the vehicle, opening fire and forcing it to a halt before whisking passengers into nearby bushes.
The incident, which surfaced through eyewitness accounts and viral videos on social media, allegedly occurred along the Benin–Ore corridor, a route linking and .
According to reports, the driver was shot dead at the scene, leaving the vehicle stranded on the highway as panic spread among commuters.
In one of the circulating videos, a witness pointed to the scene of the attack, expressing shock over the presence of security personnel in the vicinity at the time of the incident.
The footage showed the bus abandoned on the road with its doors open, while passengers’ belongings, including bags and clothing, were scattered across the expressway—suggesting a hurried and forceful abduction.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to officially confirm the attack. Efforts to reach both GUO Transport and the police for comments were unsuccessful.
The incident has, however, reignited concerns over the persistent insecurity along the Benin–Ore road, a major transit route frequently linked to kidnappings and armed attacks.
In a similar incident in 2025, suspected kidnappers attacked another GUO Transport bus along the Akunu axis, leaving passengers injured and the vehicle riddled with bullet holes.
Security analysts warn that the recurring attacks highlight ongoing vulnerabilities on Nigeria’s highways, calling for urgent and coordinated action to safeguard travellers.
