The Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for a man captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a handcuffed pastor who had been arrested over comments described by authorities as derogatory and offensive towards Prophet Muhammad.

The pastor, identified as Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, also known as Apostle Daniel JY Adjei, was reportedly in police custody when the incident occurred.

In the video, the handcuffed pastor is seen standing as a man dressed in traditional clothing approaches from behind and allegedly slaps him before walking away.

The Ghana Police Service, in a statement issued on Thursday, condemned the incident and confirmed that efforts had been intensified to identify and arrest the suspect.

Police said the suspect would be brought before the court to face the law.

The authorities also said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault and would ensure that anyone found responsible was subjected to due process.

Adjei was reportedly arrested by the police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team following a video in which he allegedly made comments considered offensive towards Prophet Muhammad.

The development comes amid growing concerns in Ghana over statements made through religious platforms and social media that could potentially provoke violence or encourage attacks against individuals or groups.

Police also reportedly arrested a 35-year-old Imam, Masud Abdullah, over alleged comments advocating violence against people who insult or speak against Prophet Muhammad.

According to the police, Abdullah allegedly made the comments during a sermon at a mosque in Ntensere, in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

Authorities said investigations into the cases are ongoing and that those found culpable would be dealt with according to the law.

The police’s response underscores the importance of maintaining public order and ensuring that allegations of offensive speech or religious provocation are handled through lawful processes rather than violence or mob action.

SUNTV Global Channel will continue to monitor the investigation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
