A farmer identified as Hammasumo Ali has reportedly lost his left hand following an alleged machete attack by a herdsman in Nyashika, Gumti Ward, Toungo Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The incident reportedly occurred while Ali was working on his farm in the community.
According to a statement by the Secretary of Information of Toungo Local Government Area, Daniel Pogu Toungo, the confrontation began after Ali attempted to stop a herdsman from allowing cattle to enter his farmland.
The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which the herdsman allegedly used a machete to attack the farmer.
Ali sustained serious injuries, resulting in the loss of his left hand.
He was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Following the incident, the Chairman of Toungo Local Government Area, Hajiya Hauwa Guruja, visited Ali at the hospital and expressed sympathy over his condition.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the longstanding tensions between farmers and herders in parts of northern Nigeria.
Disputes over farmland, cattle grazing and access to natural resources have repeatedly led to violent confrontations, resulting in injuries, deaths and destruction of property in affected communities.
Authorities and community stakeholders continue to face pressure to find lasting solutions to farmer-herder disputes and prevent similar incidents from occurring.
