The Upper West Regional Police Command in Ghana has secured the conviction of two men in separate child sexual abuse cases, resulting in prison sentences of 10 years and 20 years as authorities intensify efforts to combat sexual violence and protect vulnerable children.
In the first case, a 42-year-old man, Elyasu Kunateh, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Wa High Court after being found guilty of defiling a seven-year-old boy.
According to police, the incident was reported by the child’s mother on January 20, 2026, prompting an immediate investigation by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU). The victim received medical attention and psychosocial support while the suspect was arrested and prosecuted.
After a full trial, the court found Kunateh guilty and imposed the 10-year prison sentence.
In a separate case, the Lawra Circuit Court sentenced 47-year-old Kwame Ti-Zaaekuu to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour for repeatedly sexually abusing his 17-year-old biological daughter. The court also sentenced him to 10 years for threatening to kill the victim if she disclosed the abuse. Both sentences will run concurrently.
Investigators revealed that the abuse continued over an extended period before the victim’s ordeal came to the attention of authorities, leading to a police investigation and prosecution.
The court further directed the Department of Social Welfare in Lawra to provide counselling and psychosocial support to the survivor.
The Upper West Regional Police Command praised the investigators and prosecutors for their professionalism, reaffirming its commitment to ensuring perpetrators of child abuse, sexual offences, and gender-based violence are brought to justice.
Authorities also urged members of the public to promptly report cases of abuse to help protect vulnerable children and support victims.
