Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into a traditional ruler in Enugu State following serious allegations of forgery, impersonation, and concealment of a past criminal conviction.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the directive came after a formal petition submitted to the Nigeria Police Force by retired Colonel Charles C. Egbo. The petition accuses Mr. Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna, the disputed Igwe of Ogugu ancient kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area, of making false claims about his eligibility for the throne.
Official police correspondence confirms that the IGP has tasked the Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) to handle the case, with the Enugu Annex mandated to commence a full probe.
According to the petition, Ogbonna allegedly served a seven-year jail term in South Africa over drug-related offences — a development the petitioner argues automatically disqualifies him from occupying the Igweship stool under the community’s constitution.
The petition further alleges that despite this supposed disqualification, Ogbonna emerged from what critics described as a flawed selection process and proceeded with a controversial coronation on January 2, 2025, allegedly without obtaining the legally required Certificate of Recognition and Staff of Office from the state government.
At the center of the controversy is a Certificate of Recognition presented in April 2025. Petitioners claim the document was unsigned and lacked official authorization, describing it as a “blank sheet certificate.”
Egbo, in his petition, urged authorities to investigate what he called “scam and deceit,” pointing out that two separate coronation events within four months raised serious suspicions.
However, the Enugu State Ministry of Chieftaincy Matters and Rural Development has strongly defended the monarch. The ministry’s spokesperson insisted the certificate was authentic and properly issued, stating it was presented both at the ministry and in the ruler’s hometown.
Despite the government’s position, tensions remain high within the community, with some residents insisting the document is fraudulent and urging the FCID to conclude investigations swiftly.
Efforts to obtain reactions from Igwe Ogbonna were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Police sources say if the allegations are confirmed, the monarch could face criminal charges ranging from forgery to impersonation.
