Downtown Dubai was rocked by multiple explosions on Thursday as Iran intensified its drone and projectile campaign amid the ongoing US-Israel conflict, heightening tensions across the Gulf region.
AFP reporters on the ground heard several blasts, including one particularly loud detonation, and observed smoke rising above residential areas in Dubai’s bustling commercial district.
Dubai authorities later described the event as a “minor drone incident.” According to a statement posted on X by the Dubai Government Media Office, debris from an intercepted drone struck the façade of a building along the busy Sheikh Zayed Road corridor. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
“Dubai authorities are responding to a minor incident caused by debris from a successful interception that fell onto the façade of a building on Sheikh Zayed Road. No injuries were reported,” the statement read.
The Gulf region has seen a surge in attacks in recent days, with at least 24 people killed, including seven US service members and 11 civilians. Earlier on Thursday, a container ship off Dubai’s coast was struck by a projectile, causing a small fire, which the crew successfully contained, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Centre.
In Bahrain, an Iranian strike triggered a major fire on Muharraq Island, home to the kingdom’s international airport and critical oil storage facilities. Meanwhile, in Kuwait, a drone crash into a residential building left two people injured.
The UAE activated its air defence systems twice to intercept incoming threats targeting Dubai, while firefighters battled a blaze at a tower in Dubai Creek Harbour caused by another drone strike.
Saudi Arabia also reported new drone interceptions, including a strike aimed at the diplomatic quarter in Riyadh and threats toward the strategic Shaybah Oil Field in the country’s eastern region.
As the conflict between Iran, the US, and Israel escalates, the Gulf remains on high alert, with regional authorities racing to prevent further casualties and damage.
