A fresh wave of panic has hit traders in Kano after an early-morning fire outbreak razed dozens of shops at the Fatima Simra Multi-Purpose Market in the Dakata area.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the blaze erupted around 5:40 a.m. on Friday, catching shop owners and nearby residents off guard while most were still at home.
According to market fire committee chairman, Dauda Haruna Chula, no fewer than 50 shops were completely destroyed, with the fire still spreading as emergency responders were being awaited.
He explained that many of the affected businesses dealt in oil processing and recycling of plastics and nylon, materials known to be highly flammable, which worsened the intensity of the fire.
“From what we have seen so far, about 50 shops are already down, and the fire is still ongoing. We immediately contacted the fire service, and we can hear their vehicles approaching,” Chula said.
Reports earlier monitored by Daily Trust confirmed that market leaders quickly alerted emergency agencies as soon as the flames were noticed.
The latest incident comes less than a week after a devastating inferno destroyed more than 1,000 shops at the popular Singer Market, leaving thousands of traders counting heavy losses.
