The United States government has issued a stern travel advisory for Niger Republic, urging all American citizens to avoid travel to the country due to escalating security threats. Non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families have been ordered to leave Niger immediately, as the situation continues to deteriorate.
The U.S. Department of State cited significant dangers, including terrorism, kidnappings, violent crime, political unrest, and limited access to medical services. The advisory specifically warned that routine or emergency services outside the capital, Niamey, cannot be guaranteed, making travel beyond the city extremely hazardous.
Authorities emphasized that a state of emergency and movement restrictions are currently in effect across several regions of Niger. Foreigners traveling outside Niamey, including U.S. personnel, are required to have military escorts. Some areas under the state of emergency may be off-limits without prior notice, and restrictions can change rapidly.
U.S. government employees in Niger are instructed to:
- Travel only in armored vehicles.
- Observe a mandatory curfew.
- Avoid open-air markets, restaurants, and crowded areas.
Citizens are advised to follow similar precautions to reduce exposure to danger.
The advisory also highlights that terrorist groups continue to target vulnerable individuals and U.S. interests, using kidnapping for ransom as a common tactic. Recent attacks and abductions have been reported in Niamey, the Tillabéri region near the Mali border, the Diffa Region in the Lake Chad Basin, northern Agadez, and along the southern corridor near the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.
Violent crime, including armed robbery and residential break-ins, remains a persistent threat, while political demonstrations and protests—sometimes unpredictable—can escalate into violent incidents. The Nigerien government has increased security at protest sites, imposing checkpoints, roadblocks, and restrictions on large gatherings.
The U.S. Department of State strongly urges American citizens in Niger to remain vigilant, avoid travel outside Niamey, and follow all local security instructions.
