Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that unidentified individuals gained access to the details of one of his private bank accounts and transferred money into it without his knowledge or authorization.
According to a statement issued on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, the transfer was made into one of Atiku’s personal accounts held with a leading commercial bank in Nigeria. The transaction reportedly carried the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
The statement maintained that neither Atiku nor his campaign team requested, approved, or had prior knowledge of the payment or the individual behind it.
Atiku described the incident as a serious breach of financial privacy, noting that the account involved is strictly private and its details are not publicly available.
He questioned how confidential banking information linked to a private citizen could have been accessed, warning that if the account details of a former vice president could be exposed, the financial privacy of ordinary Nigerians could also be at risk.
The former vice president further expressed concern that the account information may have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to confidential financial records. He warned that, if proven, such an act would represent a grave abuse of power and could expose account holders to threats such as kidnapping, fraud, banditry, and other criminal activities.
Atiku also called on security agencies and the general public to take note of what he described as another suspicious development as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He alleged that the incident was part of a wider pattern of actions aimed at undermining him politically, accusing unnamed individuals of attempting to distract Nigerians through what he described as character assassination.
Despite the development, Atiku said he remains committed to presenting what he called credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges, insisting that such alleged tactics would not derail his political ambitions.
