Widespread outrage has erupted in Ozoro following disturbing reports that women were assaulted and molested by youths during a local festival in the community.
The incident, which occurred in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, has drawn condemnation from government officials, security agencies, and residents after videos surfaced online showing a woman being forcefully stripped in public.
According to eyewitness accounts, several women and girls were harassed during the event, with claims that some incidents escalated into sexual assault. The situation reportedly created fear across the community, with many women warned to stay indoors during certain hours of the celebration.
A resident involved in rescuing victims described the incident as shocking and called on authorities to ensure justice is served.
Confirming the development, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, condemned the acts as “barbaric and unacceptable,” stressing that no cultural practice justifies the violation of human rights.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered a full investigation into the incident and assured that those responsible will be identified and prosecuted.
“This is alarming, disgusting, and embarrassing. No tradition is above the law,” the police spokesperson stated, urging witnesses to come forward with useful information.
Also reacting, Isoko North Council Chairman, Godwin Ogorugba, strongly condemned the assaults, describing them as “inhumane and shameful.” He, however, noted that some individuals may have hijacked the festival to perpetrate criminal acts and denied confirmed cases of rape.
The Delta State Government has equally denounced the incident. Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, said the government is deeply disturbed by reports of harassment and alleged sexual violence.
“Such barbaric acts are totally unacceptable and have no place in our society,” Aniagwu said, calling on security agencies to bring perpetrators to justice.
Authorities emphasized that no cultural or social event should be used as a cover for criminality, assuring residents that measures are being taken to prevent a recurrence.
The incident has also raised serious concerns about the safety of residents and students of nearby institutions, including those unfamiliar with local customs.
As investigations continue, community leaders and government officials have urged calm while reaffirming their commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens, especially women.
