Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation HADIN KAI have reportedly repelled an attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a military base in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to a statement issued by the Headquarters of Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, the attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Monday, when a large number of terrorists reportedly attempted to overrun the Forward Operating Base (FOB).
The military said troops responded with heavy fire, forcing the attackers to retreat after inflicting casualties on them.
The statement, signed by Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, said several terrorists were reportedly killed during the encounter.
The military also said troops recovered weapons, ammunition and communication equipment from the attackers.
According to the statement, surveillance footage reviewed after the operation showed several casualties being evacuated by the retreating terrorists.
However, the military acknowledged that some Nigerian soldiers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
It said part of the base’s defensive position was temporarily breached during the attack, while some military vehicles and equipment were damaged by rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) fire.
The injured soldiers were reportedly evacuated by air and were said to be in stable condition while receiving medical treatment.
Following the attack, the military said troops remained deployed in and around the Forward Operating Base and adjoining communities to prevent further attempts by the terrorists to attack the position.
Residents of Gajiram and neighbouring communities were urged to remain calm and continue their lawful activities while reporting suspicious movements to security agencies.
The military said efforts were ongoing to assess the extent of casualties suffered by the terrorists and gather further intelligence from the area.
The Theatre Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining pressure on ISWAP and other armed groups operating in the North-East until lasting peace and stability are restored.
