The Nigerian Armed Forces, in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), have carried out fresh coordinated airstrike operations against suspected ISIS/ISWAP terrorists in Northern Borno State, killing more than 20 fighters.
According to a statement released on Monday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the latest military offensive targeted terrorist enclaves around Metele, a troubled community in Northern Borno that has witnessed repeated insurgent attacks over the years.
Military authorities revealed that the operation followed credible intelligence reports indicating the movement and gathering of terrorists within the area. Following the intelligence, multiple precision airstrikes were launched on identified hideouts occupied by the insurgents.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the coordinated attacks resulted in heavy casualties among the terrorists and formed part of ongoing military efforts aimed at dismantling terrorist networks operating across Nigeria’s North-East region.
The latest offensive comes only days after the reported neutralisation of notorious ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, during another joint military operation in the Lake Chad Basin.
In the statement, Major General Samaila Uba reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian military and its international partners to sustaining pressure on terrorist groups threatening national peace and security.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria, working closely with the United States Africa Command, will continue aggressive operations against terrorists threatening the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of the nation,” he stated.
The military also assured Nigerians that sustained bombardments and coordinated offensives would continue to deny insurgents freedom of movement and prevent the establishment of terrorist safe havens within the country.
Authorities maintained that there will be no hiding place for terrorists anywhere in Nigeria as security forces intensify efforts to restore lasting peace in the North-East region.
