The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered a cocaine trafficking syndicate attempting to smuggle illicit drugs to Malaysia, leading to the arrest of an alleged kingpin identified as Nwabueze Felix Onyeka, a 45-year-old PhD student at the University of Putra, Malaysia.
According to the NDLEA, Onyeka was arrested during a sting operation in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, June 29, after intelligence gathered from an earlier investigation led operatives to his hideout in Aziora, Ozubulu.
The agency said the operation began with the interception of a Malaysia-bound shipment containing 5.80 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside the walls of nine cartons of Orijin Bitters. The consignment was part of a consolidated cargo destined for Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Investigators initially arrested four suspects in Lagos, including a cargo agent, a commercial driver, a trader at ASPANDA Market, and a supplier of the cartons allegedly used to conceal the drugs. Information obtained from the suspects reportedly led to the arrest of Onyeka, who is believed to be the leader of the trafficking syndicate.
In a separate operation in Taraba State, NDLEA operatives arrested Daniel Harrison Ugwuoke, 30, along the Zaki-Biam Road in Wukari Local Government Area. Officers recovered 43,980 capsules of Tramadol concealed inside two fuel tanks of the vehicle he was travelling in.
The anti-narcotics agency also recorded major arrests in other states. In Plateau State, a 75-year-old suspect was arrested with 15 kilograms of skunk, while two suspects were apprehended in Kaduna State with 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine.
In Ebonyi State, NDLEA operatives arrested a 65-year-old man after recovering 231.7 kilograms of skunk, while another operation in Gombe State led to the arrest of two suspects found in possession of 556 kilograms of cannabis sativa.
The NDLEA said the arrests and seizures are part of its ongoing nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking networks and reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal syndicates involved in the production, transportation, and export of illicit narcotics.
