A major political shift has unfolded in Osun State as Governor Ademola Adeleke secured a wave of high-profile defections into the Accord Party, with six members of the House of Representatives and 25 state lawmakers abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ gathering in Osogbo on Monday, Adeleke said his decision to quit the PDP in December 2025 was driven by political realities and what he described as spiritual guidance.
“I love PDP, but I had to leave to avoid being politically trapped ahead of my re-election. After consultations and prayers, we were led into the Accord Party,” the governor told supporters.
He urged party faithful to unite behind the Accord platform, expressing confidence that the party would secure a decisive victory in the upcoming governorship election.
In a dramatic show of solidarity, six federal lawmakers from Osun State elected under the PDP officially declared their defection during the meeting.
Speaking for the group, Hon. Clement Akanni announced that representatives from multiple constituencies had collectively resolved to join the Accord Party, citing the need to align with the governor’s political direction.
He also predicted a landslide win for Adeleke, calling on supporters to remain vigilant during the election process and safeguard their votes.
State Assembly Members Join Wave
The political realignment deepened as 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly, all elected on the PDP platform in the 2023 general elections, also dumped the party.
The lawmakers said their decision was aimed at ensuring continued effective representation of their constituents while supporting the governor’s agenda.
The mass defections signal a significant shake-up in Osun’s political landscape ahead of the next governorship election, potentially reshaping party strength and alliances across the state.
Analysts say the development could weaken the PDP’s influence locally while boosting the Accord Party’s chances in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
