ABUJA, Nigeria — The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu amid mounting criticism over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, saying the President has fulfilled his constitutional duty by directing the nation’s security agencies.
Speaking at the U.S.-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala organised by the Save Nigeria Group in Washington, D.C., Adeboye said it is unrealistic to expect the Commander-in-Chief to personally lead military operations against terrorists.
“You don’t expect the President to wear military uniform and go to the battlefield himself. Once he has given instructions to the military and security agencies, he has done his part,” Adeboye said.
Drawing a comparison with the United States, the respected cleric noted that American President Donald Trump authorises military operations without personally participating in combat, stressing that the responsibility of a Commander-in-Chief is to give strategic direction.
Despite defending President Tinubu, Adeboye acknowledged that Nigeria’s security crisis has worsened significantly. He expressed concern that terrorism, kidnapping, and violent attacks, once largely concentrated in the North, have now spread to parts of Southern Nigeria.
The cleric disclosed that he recently discussed the country’s security situation with President Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, urging the President to issue a firm 90-day ultimatum to military commanders to eliminate terrorism or step down from their positions.
“Tell all the military commanders: ‘You have 90 days. Wipe out this menace or resign,'” Adeboye said.
He further argued that the real battle should be against the financiers of terrorism rather than only the gunmen carrying out attacks.
According to him, many of the sponsors are known and include influential businessmen and politicians who continue to operate freely.
“If those supplying arms, ammunition and funding are not brought to justice, the problem will continue,” he warned.
Adeboye also called on the United States and the international community to strengthen cooperation with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, emphasizing that dismantling the financial networks supporting terrorist groups is key to ending the country’s insecurity.
