Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed confidence that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will lose the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election.
Amaechi made the remark during a recent interview on Trust TV, monitored on Monday, where he spoke about his defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the ADC coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the major issue in the party’s internal contest is not the number of times a candidate has contested for president, but rather “electability” and the ability to defeat the ruling party at the polls.
He said:
“I hope this will be the first time he will fail primary. But that’s not even the issue. The issue is electability… It’s about whether a candidate can win the election.”
Amaechi further argued that repeated attempts at the presidency without success in general elections should raise questions about a candidate’s viability.
The ADC coalition is currently witnessing internal discussions and tension among top aspirants, including Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, as the party prepares for its presidential primary.
Party stakeholders are reportedly considering strategies to avoid internal divisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
As political realignments continue across major parties, the opposition landscape remains highly competitive ahead of the next general election.
