Fresh fears over worsening insecurity in Northern Nigeria emerged on Monday after armed bandits reportedly attacked a busy grain market in Guga village, Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least 10 persons, including a pregnant woman.
According to residents, the heavily armed attackers stormed the community in broad daylight on Sunday, opening fire on traders, farmers and villagers gathered at the market square.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen operated for several hours without resistance, forcing many residents to flee into nearby bushes and neighbouring communities for safety.
Several houses were reportedly set ablaze during the attack, while livestock including cows, goats and sheep were carted away by the assailants.
Community sources revealed that many of the victims were local farmers from neighbouring communities such as Gidan Sarkin Noma and Gidan Wawo who had travelled to the market to sell their produce.
Residents described the attack as one of the deadliest incidents recorded in the area in recent months, lamenting the continued attacks, killings and destruction affecting rural communities across Katsina State.
The deceased victims were reportedly buried on Monday morning following funeral prayers attended by grieving families and sympathisers.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Katsina State Government nor security authorities had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
This is becoming too much. Innocent Nigerians continue to lose their lives daily while many communities live in constant fear.
