Armed soldiers and security operatives have been deployed to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja following threats of a mass protest by members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Eyewitness reports and images show a strong presence of Nigerian Army personnel, armoured tanks, and heavily armed officers of the Nigeria Police Force stationed around the commission’s premises. The area has been cordoned off, with movement in and out of the facility significantly restricted.
The heightened security comes amid escalating tensions within the ADC, which is currently facing a deep leadership crisis that has split the party into rival factions.
The crisis intensified after INEC removed the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary of the party, respectively.
According to the commission, the action was taken in compliance with preservatory orders issued by the Court of Appeal, directing all parties to maintain the status quo pending the outcome of an ongoing case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The legal dispute involves competing claims to the party’s leadership, including a challenge from another faction linked to Nafiu Bala Gombe. INEC confirmed it had received conflicting communications from different groups within the party.
In response, the commission announced that it would suspend recognition of any faction of the ADC and refrain from engaging with any group until the court delivers a final judgment.
The development has sparked outrage among party members, with some accusing INEC of bias and political interference, prompting plans for a protest at the commission’s headquarters.
