Former Secretary to the Benue State Government (SSG), Prof. David Salifu, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack by suspected armed bandits along the Wukari–Zakibiam Highway linking Taraba and Benue states.
Prof. Salifu reportedly passed away in the early hours of Friday at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, where he had been receiving treatment following the attack.
The late professor served as Secretary to the Benue State Government during the administration of former Governor Gabriel Suswam and was also a lecturer at the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State.
According to available information, Prof. Salifu was travelling from Wukari to Makurdi on Thursday morning when suspected gunmen intercepted his vehicle on the outskirts of Wukari.
Witnesses said the attackers forced him to stop and allegedly ordered him to disembark and board a motorcycle. He was reportedly shot after resisting the directive.
He was initially taken to a hospital in Wukari before being transferred to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi for specialist medical care. Despite efforts by doctors to save his life, he later died from his injuries.
Confirming the incident, Chief David Olofu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Benue South Senatorial candidate and a close associate of the deceased, described Prof. Salifu as a trusted confidant and an important member of his campaign council.
Olofu disclosed that the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Wukari, approved the release of an ambulance and medical personnel to assist in evacuating the injured professor to Makurdi for advanced treatment.
The tragic incident has renewed concerns over the persistent insecurity along major highways connecting Benue and Taraba states, where motorists have repeatedly reported attacks by armed criminals.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the attack, while investigations are expected to continue.
SUNTV Global Channel extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Prof. David Salifu and will continue to provide verified updates as more details emerge.
