Operatives of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested a sixth suspect linked to the gruesome 2022 massacre at St. Francis Catholic Church, in a major breakthrough nearly four years after the attack that left more than 40 worshippers dead.
SUNTV Global Channel gathered that the suspect, identified as Sani Yusuf, was captured in Iguosa community along the Powerline axis of Ovia North-East Local Government Area in Edo State after years of intelligence tracking.
Security sources told SUNTV Global that Yusuf had been one of Nigeria’s most wanted fugitives since the June 5, 2022 terror attack in Owo, Ondo State — an incident that shocked the nation and drew global outrage.
Investigations revealed he initially fled to Kano State shortly after the attack before relocating to Edo State, where he allegedly lived quietly under a concealed identity among unsuspecting residents.
According to a senior security official, DSS operatives maintained surveillance on Yusuf for years before finally closing in on him.
“This was not a routine suspect. Yusuf is a high-ranking commander who played a strategic role in planning and executing the Owo church massacre,” the source disclosed.
During interrogation, Yusuf reportedly confessed to direct involvement not only in the Owo church killings but also in several deadly operations attributed to Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Security insiders say he admitted participation in:
- The attack on a military checkpoint near Zuma Rock, which killed five soldiers
- The July 2022 assault on Suleja military barracks
- Multiple kidnappings across Kaduna State
He also reportedly revealed that he operated under senior ISWAP commanders, including Abu Ikirimah, who was arrested by DSS in 2024.
Authorities confirmed that five other suspects are already facing prosecution over their alleged roles in the Owo massacre.
Security officials say Yusuf’s arrest marks a significant step toward justice for victims and their families.
“This operation shows the DSS remains relentless in its campaign against terrorism and in ensuring accountability for those responsible,” a security source told SUNTV Global.
The arrest is being viewed as a major milestone in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and a renewed sign of hope for survivors and families affected by one of the country’s deadliest attacks on a place of worship.
