Panic and grief engulfed Gamborun Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday following a deadly explosion that ripped through a mosque during prayer time, leaving several worshippers feared killed and many others injured.

The blast occurred while congregants were gathered inside the mosque for prayers, triggering chaos as thick smoke billowed from the building and terrified traders and residents fled the area for safety.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, confirmed the incident, stating that the explosive device detonated within the mosque, instantly killing some worshippers and inflicting varying degrees of injuries on others.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion caused panic across the busy market, forcing traders to abandon their shops as residents ran in different directions. Some individuals were seen attempting to rescue the injured and provide first aid before the arrival of emergency services.

Emergency responders and security operatives later arrived at the scene, swiftly cordoning off the area to prevent further casualties and to carry out an initial security assessment. The injured were reportedly evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release official figures on the number of casualties. The incident has left the Gamborun Market community in shock, renewing fears over security in the state.
