In a significant political move, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has nominated Peter Akpe as the state’s new Deputy Governor, following the sudden passing of former Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, on December 11, 2025.
The nomination, made under Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), comes after weeks of political consultations, lobbying, and intense speculation across the state, where issues of zoning, loyalty, and administrative experience were widely debated.
Mr. Akpe, who previously served as a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and most recently as Governor Diri’s Chief of Staff, hails from Sagbama Local Government Area in the Bayelsa West Senatorial District — the same region as the late Ewhrudjakpo — ensuring continuity in representation.
The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has commenced the screening process for Mr. Akpe, and details regarding his official swearing-in are expected soon from the Government House.
SUNTV Global Channel will continue to follow this story and provide updates on the formal induction of Bayelsa’s new deputy leader.
