At least five people have been killed and several others injured following a deadly night attack on Gwan-Ajang village in Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, has heightened concerns over the persistent insecurity in Plateau communities despite ongoing security operations and government interventions.
Confirming the incident, the Plateau State Police Command said officers responded swiftly after receiving a distress call at about 9:22 p.m.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, residents were attending a social gathering when armed gunmen suddenly opened fire.
“We received a report of a shooting in Gwan-Ajang village and immediately deployed personnel to the area to restore order,” Alabo stated.
He explained that security operatives arrived at the scene to find several victims lying in pools of blood. Five people were confirmed dead, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Alabo noted that the affected community is located near the boundary between Barkin Ladi and Mangu Local Government Areas, resulting in conflicting reports regarding the exact location of the attack.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations to lead efforts aimed at tracking down and arresting those responsible for the killings.
He added that security agencies are collaborating with Operation Safe Haven and other security formations deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
“Calm has been restored, and we are working on credible intelligence that will help us make arrests,” Alabo said.
However, community leaders have challenged the official casualty figure. The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association, Rwang Tengwong, claimed that no fewer than seven people lost their lives during the attack.
Tengwong further alleged that over 10 residents sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals.
The latest incident adds to the growing wave of violence that has continued to claim lives across Plateau State, raising fresh concerns about the safety of rural communities and the effectiveness of ongoing security measures.
