At least 12 people have been feared killed following a series of deadly attacks by armed bandits on several communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The coordinated attacks reportedly targeted Tungan Aljana, Tungan Makeri and Daidanai communities, where heavily armed assailants unleashed terror, killing residents, setting homes ablaze and rustling large numbers of cattle.
According to reports from local sources, the attackers first stormed Tungan Aljana, killing three residents and destroying parts of the community before making away with livestock belonging to villagers.
The gunmen later moved to Tungan Makeri, where nine more people were reportedly killed during another violent raid. Residents said the attackers also stole cattle and other valuables before fleeing the area.
Reports further indicate that the bandits advanced to Daidanai community, where additional casualties and livestock losses were recorded, although authorities have yet to officially confirm the full extent of the damage.
The attacks have left many families devastated, with residents mourning loved ones while counting losses from destroyed property and stolen livestock, which serve as the primary source of livelihood for many rural households.
In response to the attacks, hundreds of local vigilantes from communities across Borgu Local Government Area have reportedly launched a large-scale manhunt for the perpetrators.
Sources said the vigilantes have been joined by volunteers from neighbouring Benin Republic, highlighting growing concerns over cross-border criminal activities along the Nigeria-Benin border.
Security experts have linked the recurring attacks in the area to the activities of armed groups operating from remote forest regions around the Kainji Lake National Park, which has long been identified as a hideout for terrorists and bandit groups.
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns about the security situation in Niger State, particularly in rural communities where residents continue to face attacks despite repeated assurances from authorities.
As of the time of this report, neither the Niger State Police Command nor the Defence Headquarters had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
Investigations and search operations are ongoing.
