Tragedy has struck in Maiduguri, as a father reportedly lost all four of his sons in a series of deadly explosions that rocked the city, leaving at least 27 people dead and many others injured.
The coordinated blasts hit multiple busy locations, including the gate of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the popular Monday Market roundabout, and the Post Office area—sparking widespread panic across Borno State.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victims—four young boys—had gone out to purchase eyeglasses in preparation for the upcoming Sallah celebration when the explosions occurred.
A local trader, Usman Lawan, recounted the heartbreaking incident, revealing that the children were neighbors known in the area.
“They had just eaten and went to buy eyeglasses for Sallah. The blast killed all of them. They were buried the next day,” he said.
Lawan himself survived the explosion but lost his entire source of livelihood.
“I had just finished Iftar and was pushing my fruit cart when the blast happened. I woke up in the hospital—everything I owned is gone,” he added.
A security guard at the hospital, who sustained injuries, narrated how suspected attackers attempted to gain entry into the facility on a motorcycle.
“I stopped them the first time, but they returned. When I refused again, they threw a container at me. It exploded. As I tried to escape, another blast hit my leg,” he explained.
In another painful account, a grieving mother described how she lost her daughter moments after arriving at the hospital.
“We had just reached there when the bomb exploded. I fell, and my daughter died instantly… I leave everything to God,” she said tearfully.
Several injured victims, including petty traders, are currently receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and Umaru Shehu Hospital.
One of the victims, Alhaji Bashir, expressed concern over the future, saying many survivors may face hardship if urgent support is not provided.
“Even after recovery, many of us may suffer if we don’t get help to rebuild our businesses,” he said.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, raising concerns among residents over safety, especially during festive periods.
