Armed bandits have reportedly attacked Government Secondary School (GSS) Opada-Olowa in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting the school principal, a National Examinations Council (NECO) supervisor and four students while candidates were sitting for their examinations.
The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, causing panic as the gunmen stormed the school during the ongoing examination.
Security sources said a joint team of security operatives immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation following the incident. One of the abducted students has reportedly been rescued, while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining victims.
The security team has intensified bush-combing operations, surveillance and intelligence gathering across the area in a bid to locate the kidnappers’ hideout and rescue those still in captivity.
A community leader, Sunday Alkali, said residents were relaxing nearby when the armed men suddenly appeared.
According to him, the attackers initially retreated after noticing many people in the area but later returned, firing sporadically and forcing residents to flee.
Residents said they only realised the school had been targeted after the gunfire stopped. On returning to the premises, they reportedly found examination papers scattered across classrooms and the school compound, while students and school officials were nowhere to be seen.
The abducted victims were identified as the school principal, Mr. Nyada Daniel, NECO supervisor Mr. Solomon Audu, and four students.
Sources also disclosed that the kidnappers have reportedly contacted relatives of some of the victims, demanding ransom for their release.
Security agencies have continued efforts to rescue the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
