The African Union Commission has strongly condemned the deadly terrorist attack in Zamfara State that left more than 50 civilians dead and several women and children abducted.
In an official statement released on Sunday, the Commission’s Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, described the February 21 assault as a “heinous and coordinated terrorist attack” targeting innocent civilians in northwestern Nigeria.
According to the AU, the killings represent a grave violation of human rights and pose a serious threat to peace, security, and stability across the region.
The continental body reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and violent extremism, stressing that attacks on civilian populations — particularly women and children — are unacceptable under any circumstances.
Youssouf also conveyed the AU’s solidarity with the Nigerian government and citizens, extending condolences to families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
The Commission further called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all abducted victims, while urging stronger coordinated efforts to protect civilians and prevent future atrocities.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the African Union’s continued support for Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity and restore lasting peace.
